Fantastic Planet

5 x 8.5m x 8m inflatable illuminated humanoid figure

A giant inflatable illuminated white figure invaded London’s Canary Wharf during Winter Lights Festival in January. This giant from afar gave festival goers the impression that they had just landed and were quietly and gently exploring our ‘fantastic planet’. The aim of the piece is to remind festival goers that our planet is indeed fantastic. Inspiration for this light installation came from the 1973 Czech/ French film Fantastic Planet (French: La Planète sauvage). This stop motion science fiction film directed by René Laloux and designed by Roland Topor depicts a story set in an unimaginably distant future where human beings are a feral race on the world of gargantuan humanoids.
